Writing (10-20 min.)

The Writing activity follows the Shout Out and is grounded in the topic developed during the previous components. Students are prompted to write for authentic purposes: to express thoughts or point of view, to persuade, to inform, to entertain or to share a piece of their lives. Writing activities may last one day or may continue over several days. Teachers are trained to vary their approaches according to student needs, choosing from balanced literacy writing components that include modeled, shared, guided and independent writing. Writing can take many forms. Material from the Read Aloud is often used as a model for student work. Teachers engage in roving conferences to support student needs. Mini-lessons provide direct instruction for needed skills and strategies. Topics might include peer editing, revision, effective word use, how to write a persuasive piece, etc. Work is kept in folders and journals and is displayed. Displays change frequently and reflect the diversity of the learning community.
