Word Works (10-20 min.)

Reading games are a perfect way for instructors to teach and reinforce reading skills as a playful, motivating part of the YET program. Instructors may group youth based on the skills and strategies that they are beginning to develop; this can be accomplished by using information gathered from formal assessments, from observations made in writing and independent reading conferences. The YET Handbook provides recommended games, which may be adapted for a particular group of students. Students move to new games once mastery is achieved. Games take many forms and may include word sorts, sight word concentration, vocabulary bingo, etc.
