| What is YET?
In June 2000, Public/Private Ventures (P/PV) established the Youth Education for Tomorrow (YET) initiative, an after-school and summer literacy program originally based in Philadelphia. To date, YET Centers have improved participants’ reading scores an average of 1.2 grade levels for those with at least 180 days between tests. Since the program’s inception, P/PV’s after school literacy technical assistance has expanded to reach children in over 500 after school classrooms throughout the nation. P/PV designed the YET program model in cooperation with leading literacy experts specifically for use in after-school settings. The services provided by YET Centers are consistent with No Child Left Behind’s essential components for literacy instruction, and all strategies and materials have been shown by research to be effective in increasing reading performance. YET’s literacy instruction is provided for an hour and a half each day, four or five days per week. Centers follow a daily schedule of activities, varying with age, grade and reading level, assuring a balanced literacy program comprised of independent student reading and teacher reading, oral language, vocabulary and comprehension activities, writing and reading games. ![]()
