Shout Out
(5-10 min.)
The
Shout Out is a fun, fast-paced activity that
follows the Read Aloud.
It is designed to extend student thinking about what they have
just heard and talked about. Shout Out is essentially a brainstorming
activity used to build vocabulary, comprehension and a sense of
classroom community. In this activity, the teacher poses a question or
topic related to the Read Aloud and writes it on chart paper, a
chalkboard or a projected display.
Graphic organizers appropriate to the topic and material are used to
capture and categorize youth’s thoughts as ideas emerge.
Students are encouraged to share ideas, learn from each other and
appreciate differences. Divergent and critical thinking are encouraged.
While all responses are accepted, the teacher may further support a
student whose answer may be vague or off-topic. The Shout Out chart
remains posted for the entire session,
or for several days or weeks, to be used
as a reference for writing, vocabulary reinforcement or discussion.
