Read Aloud
(10-25 min.)
The Read Aloud is one of the most
important components of the daily YET Center routine and has been shown
through research to be a critical element for improving reading
achievement. This is the time for adults to share their excitement about
reading in a way that helps students make connections to themselves,
reading and the world. Using a variety of print resources (fiction,
informational books, newspapers, articles, letters, editorials, poetry,
etc.), teachers model fluent reading, often stopping to “think aloud”
and demonstrate how reading works. Teachers pose a variety of questions
that encourage thinking on many levels. During the Read Aloud a theme or
topic might be introduced and can be used for the day, the week or
longer. This interactive activity also uses group discussion to tap or
build on prior knowledge and to ensure engagement.
