| What is YET?
Public/Private Ventures (P/PV) established the Youth Education for Tomorrow (YET) initiative in Philadelphia in 2000 to support and strengthen faith- and community-based organizations' efforts to help children learn to read. Since then, this after-school and summer literacy model has been expanded to reach more than 10,000 K-12 youth in over 500 classrooms throughout the nation. To date, children who've participated in Philadelphia's YET Centers for at least 180 days have had reading scores improve an average of 1.2 grade levels. This balanced literacy model has research based components that improve the reading levels of participants and contain evaluation components to monitor the effectiveness of program implementation, making it a true continuous improvement model. P/PV designed the YET program model in cooperation with leading literacy experts specifically for use in after-school settings. The services provided by YET Centers are consistent with No Child Left Behind’s essential components for literacy instruction, and all strategies and materials have been shown by research to be effective in increasing reading performance. YET’s literacy instruction is provided for an hour and a half each day, four or five days per week. Centers follow a daily schedule of activities, varying with age, grade and reading level, assuring a balanced literacy program comprised of independent student reading and teacher reading, oral language, vocabulary and comprehension activities, writing and reading games.
