Independent Reading (25-50 min.)

Independent reading provides “reading muscle.” One of the strongest indicators of student reading success is the amount of time spent reading–especially when students are reading individually selected books that they are able to read without coaching or help. Students choose books from leveled libraries and keep track of the amount of reading they complete in a daily reading log. Sessions begin with a one- or two-minute mini-lesson that encourages use of strategies or skills that “good readers” use. Trained coaches (instructors, volunteers, parents, etc.) support student reading by listening to and discussing reading through individual conferences and by keeping track of student strengths and needs. Most Centers use The 100 Book Challenge® (www.100bookchallenge.org), a standards-based core independent-reading program designed to inspire, monitor and reward reading achievement. 100 Book Challenge® libraries match student reading levels and provide opportunities for differentiated instruction. Student achievement is acknowledged and rewarded regularly so that reading becomes a daily celebration in YET Centers.
