Curriculum Books to Borrow for Your Site
Community Building Curriculum: Grades K-3; 4-6 As an orientation to the YET model in the after-school classroom, this curriculum addresses issues that help youth contribute to a community diverse in backgrounds and skills as they become a community of self-identified readers and writers. Covering an array of concepts such as friendship, family (embracing students' background and traditions), self-esteem, bullying and more, the unit can be delivered over a 6-8 week period. Lesson plans are provided to assist teachers in understanding the flow of YET. Read Aloud books are supplied. The K-3 Community Building Curriculum covers the following topics:
The Grade 4-6 Community-Building Curriculum covers these topics:
Curriculum for Older Youth In order to assist sites in getting started with projects, P/PV created Teen Kits that address the YET components and provide start-up lesson plans. Teen Kits were developed for youth in grades 7-12. Some materials are appropriate for youth in 5-6 grades as well. Several include suggestions for a hands-on group project. Currently available Teen Kits: Strong Teens/Strong Neighborhoods In collaboration with Youth Communication, P/PV developed the anthology Strong Teens/Strong Neighborhoods, a compilation of youth writing centered around topics relevant to urban youth such as violence, dating and lack of healthy food choices in their community. The anthology is meant to be used as material for Read Aloud as well as Independent Reading and is accompanied by a 5-6 week curriculum. While no group project is suggested, there are many opportunites to develop. Oral History/Memoir; Baseball (focus on Negro Leagues; Filmmaking; Fashion) In collaboration with two community-based organizations in New York City, Harlem RBI and Groundwork, P/PV staff and Literacy Coaches developed Teen Kits around four topics. Read Aloud articles and lesson plans for YET are provided. Each topic has a set of 50-75 leveled, relevant books for use as either Read Aloud resources or as Independent Reading selections. Each of these Teen Kits is accompanied by a 5-6 week curriculum. Please contact Melissia McKittrick at 215.557.4482 or mmckittrick@ppv.org for more information. | |
